Internship Portfolio

  I had a great experience during my internship and also glad to know them, my superiors (Mr Dell, Ms Tang and Mr Edward) and also the other 2 interns (Aaron and Martin). Sometimes we had fun and sometimes we were serious especially trying to complete the task given to us. But most of all, I enjoyed every moment we spent together, in the office and also during lunch hours. Mr Dell is a fun person to hang out where he will talks about crazy and interesting topic during lunch hour but serious during work. Ms Tang is a hardworking and organized person. She also good with design and color matching. As for Edward, he is an active and helpful person. During the interns, he helped us a lot by giving us some suggestions and sometimes he put his work aside and helped us to complete our task together when he knew that we are out of time. Aaron, he is an international students from Indonesia. He is good with drawings and words but there's quite a few times where he will stuck in his own world when he is too concentrate. Lastly, Martin, who want to complete task in the shortest time but quality work. We celebrated Chinese New Year together where we “Lou San” in the office, and we also celebrated Mr  Dell and Edward’s birthday. On the last day of internships, Mr Dell treat us a good lunch to thank us for the passed 3 months working for him and also farewell. But of course, he sometimes will treat us lunch too. Overall, this is the best time I had and not regarding choosing this company to complete my interns and I see some good changes. Those who always come late for work for the first month has changed. Besides that, interns in a small company is far more better than those companies that had developed a strong foundation. Reasons is because we were able to experience the process of developing a good foundations for the company and get to increase wide knowledge & know about the inside out as we were exposed of doing it.

  Internship is where we students have to select a company that somehow related to our course and work for a duration of 3 months. During that time, we will be able to learn, gain experience and associate how the real working life would be like when we graduated and eventually join the society.

  During the preparations for internship, as in applying for a opportunity to work for the company for 3months, first have to prepare a resume, and before that, thanks to Taylor’s Lakeside University for preparing workshops & training for us. It had been a great help especially on preparing resume and also others important informations. Unfortunately, there wasn't much preparation and planning as it came up all the sudden. It could also said as last minute work and preparation, as I wasn't aware that we have to find company and also get the offer letter in December, right before the examination. It was such a rush, where I did a few mistakes when inserting informations into the resume. However, I would like to thanks to a person who helped me much, Mr. Christopher, for sending my resume to others small company firm and also to our own university. As for the goals, well, my goals is to just finish this internship fast and hopefully could pass. But that was my first thoughts, my first goals before I entered the company that I'm internship for.

  After a couple of days, I got calls for an unknown number (which is the company I worked for). During that time, we had 2 times interview which is through phone, and I'm so nervous about it. At the same time, I was thinking whether will I be selected, but I put in my best, and the efforts did not go to waste. I was offered an offering letter after a week after the interview. I also got calls from few others company, also include Taylor’s itself, but I rejected because I got an offer and I also afraid to go through interviews again.

  The company (SHIFTZ Management & Consultancy PLT) I internship for is a company specialized in management and consultancy, such as International Standard Organization (ISO) 9001, ISO 14001 and much more, which founded by Mr. Dell in Novemeber 2014. Here's a few questions. What is SHIFTZ? By the word itself, it means change, and in SHIFTZ, we believe people want to change not because they forced to, but because They Want It. What is ISO? As the name showed there, is an international standard accepted by most of the country, where ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 is international standards for product quality and also the environment respectively. The consultants in the company, we called as SHIFTZ Agent, where they provide consulting and trainings to those company who are certified for ISO or going for it. There wasn't any department as it was still a small company and it consists of any 3 people, excluding the interns.

  The job that I got offered is like sales marketing department where I have to devise sales & marketing plan to introduce 1 day ARENA, plan, organize, coordinate, & execute event management for the ARENA and also monitor, analyze, & improve the promotion campaign to increase the sales of ARENA with the other 2 interns which also from Taylor's Lakeside.
  I have learned a lot of things during the interns for that company. Firstly, I roughly understand how the process/stages that those others company had to go through to get certified by the certification body such as SIRIM and SGS. Secondly, working together as a team with the 2 other interns and communicate. Besides that, we were exposed to learn the basic skill of Photoshop, get to know what our laptop application can do. For example, MacBook was able to crop a certain object in the picture easily. Other than that, I also learnt that, we don't have to put so much time into one draft, but tried to create as much quality drafts as possible in a short period of time. Because eventually, it was just drafts for gathering ideas and combine it to make it into the best idea. Lastly, don't afraid to ask. Because the more you ask, the more understanding and information that you could gather also roughly know what the superior wants. Most important things that I gained from there was that, we have to look from all the perspective on what will they think for each thing we do/design, how will it impact them and also what negative effect will lead to them?

  The work structure inside the company is both centralized and decentralized. Where the superiors will discuss with each other on important matters and then pass down the information/solution to below. But sometimes, we got back the feedback slow as the top superiors as Mr Dell went oversea to give training or a talk. That’s where the delaying and low efficiency. As for decentralized, we interns were able to make own decision by giving good recommendations to the superiors on something, such as the layout of the design, if the majority vote for it and there wasn’t any negative impact to the society (customers). Decentralization is good, as interns were given chances (empowered) to be creative and innovative.

  At the beginning, for the first few task, me and another 2 interns wasted one whole day and only able to hand up only 1 draft to our superiors but the feedback wasn't that good. There wasn't much teamwork at the first, and we couldn’t adapt each of our ideas and make it into a group draft. We treat it as individual and not team. Sometimes, our draft were worse than the first draft after getting feedback from our superiors and Mr Dell was mad. Furthermore, we always unable to start our task on time, which is 9am, due to some people came to work at least 30 minutes late for the first month. As time goes by, day after day, we learned, we understand and things get better and better than the first time we stepped into the company. Those who late for work never late for work anymore on the second and third month if there isn't any special case. Although there's development and growth, but I wouldn't said it that we achieved all the achievement. Sad to say that, we did not achieve one important thing, which is execute the event (ARENA). Everything is too rush and all of the sudden, where we were only given a short period of  time to come out with something that we aren't familiar with. However, we tried our very best to finish most of the task given to us before our internship ends.

For individual achievement, I have completed :
(1) Website layout design;
(2) Create a fun track sheet;
(3) Chinese New Year’s Greeting Card and;
(4) Two posters for the SHIFTZolution initiative programs.

What we have completed as a group :
 (1) Story book;
(2) Three articles;
(3) Study research and;
(4) Brochure for promoting the event (ARENA).

  Story book is the modification of the whole SHIFTZolution initiative programs where it tells story and shows some interesting characters who went through the process of MINDSHIFTZ, CAPASHIFTZ and CULTURESHIFTZ. Each of us take one part and create the drawings and storylines, helped each other when they are stuck and ran out of ideas. Example, some having difficulties to create the character’s gesture they have imagined it.

  As for the 3 articles, it was the full article related to MINDSHIFTZ, CAPASHIFTZ and CULTURESHIFTZ on the importance of having to go through this initiative programs where it will be updated to the blogs and company’s website every month.

  When there's development, growth and achievement, there will also be challenges faced during the internship process. To me, the hardest challenge was that each of us have to make phone calls to those company with ISO 9001 certified and introduce them about the company I'm working for and also tried to pull them to attend the event (ARENA), because I'm a shy person - especially when talking to random stranger people, and as in this case, which is sales person to customers, lack of practice and experience when dealing with different personality and counter back them. However, it will not stop me from calling because what I really want to achieve at the end of the internship is confident, confident to talk. Unfortunately, it does not goes as I planned because all of us stopped calling after 2 weeks of trying and got tired and beaten up by all those rejections. Rejections such as got hang up right even we introduce who we are, and mostly rejects about the event as it was too rush or they already went for the training or was implementing the latest version of ISO 9001:2015. But on the bright side, a little improvement is better than never tried to conquer the weakness.

  Lastly, last part for this portfolio, where I have to tell what's my future plans such as in career plans and also further development required. Well, I never thought of it so far before. But, I will go vacation for at least 3 months after graduated and throw everything aside first. After that, starts finding work that suits my course then resign and get some job which are not related to my major where both offers good benefits and also wages. Why do I get some jobs which are not related to my major is because I want to gain more knowledge and different experience for a better future and development.
